Part of this is because there is SO MUCH INFORMATION out there. I'm reminded of the 2000 novel KILLING TIME by Caleb Carr, set in 2025, when the Internet "remains the main source of information," and much of it is false, yet people in general don't really seem to notice how they're being manipulated.
